Recipe

Prepare Chakalaka as side dish or as a main course

Chakalaka, the spicy vegetable dish from South Africa, is quick and easy to prepare. For a quick version, I put together the Chakalaka spice mix for you.

This is a super simple recipe with no special ingredients and easy to make. You can serve it as a side dish or with other ingredients as a main dish.

Preparation time

30 minutes

Equals

4 portions (as main dish)
6 portions (as side dish)

Ingredients & preparation

Ingredients

100 g Chakalaka (1 package)
1 tbsp. neutral oil
700 ml broth, fond or water
480 g home-cooked beans (or canned)
  salt and pepper

Preparation

  1. Heat the oil in a medium size skillet on medium heat and add the entire package of the chakalaka mixture. Stir until all ingredients are lightly coated with oil.
  2. Add the liquid. Broth or stock will give your chakalaka a little more flavor, but you can also add just water.
  3. Once it's simmering, you can turn the heat down and simmer for about 15 minutes. Don't forget to stir from time to time.
  4. Add the beans, mix well and let it simmer on low heat until the beans are heated.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Tips

  • You can also use all kinds of dried beans or legumes, including chick peas, and shelled Edamame. Cook them beforehand according to the instructions on the packaging.
  • Alternatively, you can of course use beans from a jar or can. This saves you some work.
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon and a tablespoon of cream fresh or Greek yogurt, make for a great addition.

Other add-ins

Following add-ins work perfectly instead of beans:

  • carrots cut into strips
  • pumpkin cut into cubes
  • diced sweet potatoes
  • all types of rice
  • noodles
  • fried chicken strips
  • and of course meat
