Salt, Seasoning Salt & Seasoning Blend - what is the difference?

Rock salt and seasoning salt are two types of salt that can be used in cooking. Rock salt is a natural salt extracted from the rock in which it was formed. Seasoning salts are salts that are enriched with various herbs and spices.

Rock Salt or Primal Salt

Both terms mean the same thing. It is salt that was created millions of years ago from evaporated seawater and found beneath rock layers such as e.g. in the Alps.

Rock salt has a mild and pure taste that brings out the natural flavors of food. It is also rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, which are important for our health.

You can use primal salt for cooking, baking or seasoning food. However, it dissolves in water more slowly than table salt, so it may not be as good for pickling or marinating.

Seasoning Salts

Seasoned salts have an intense and diverse taste that enriches dishes with additional nuances. They can consist of different combinations of salt and other ingredients such as garlic, lemon, chili, rosemary or smoked paprika.

Seasoning salts can be used to refine soups, salads, meat or vegetables. But what is the difference to seasoning blends? More on that below.

More taste with less salt

Seasoning salts are often very salty and can therefore mask the taste of food or increase the salt content.

For me personally, I often find the salt content in seasoning salts from other manufacturers far too high, because I want to give my dishes flavor and not over-season them.

Difference between Seasoning Salt and Seasoning Blend

For this reason, I have kept the salt content of the Seasoned Salt as low as possible so that it can still be called a seasoning salt. In the case of seasoning salts, the salt content must be 40% or higher.

That's why my Rosemary and Lemon Seasoning are not seasoning salts, because the salt content is too low for that. Therefore, according to the official name, they are spice preparations.

The salt content is usually enough for me. If it's too low for you, you can add a little more salt, of course.
